Buying a ring online can feel a little nerve-wracking if you don’t know your size. The good news is you don’t need a jeweler or a special tool. With a strip of paper, a ruler and a couple of minutes, you can get a pretty accurate measurement right at home.
Most of my rings are one of a kind and marked with a US size, so I want you to feel confident before you order. Here’s exactly how I recommend measuring.
Method 1: The paper strip method
This is the easiest way if you don’t have a ring that already fits.
- Cut a thin strip of paper, about a quarter inch wide and 4 inches long.
- Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to wear the ring on. It should feel comfortable, not tight.
- Mark the spot where the paper overlaps with a pen.
- Lay the strip flat and measure from the end to your mark in millimeters. That’s the circumference of your finger.
- Compare your number to the chart below.
I like paper better than string, because string can stretch and give you a size that’s too big. Also make sure the paper can still slide over your knuckle. If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, measure both and go with a size that will fit over the knuckle.
Method 2: Measure a ring that already fits
If you have a ring that fits the finger you’re shopping for, this is even easier.
- Lay the ring flat on a ruler.
- Measure straight across the inside of the ring, edge to edge, in millimeters. Don’t include the metal.
- That number is the inside diameter. Compare it to the chart.
You can also send me a photo of a well-fitting ring next to a ruler, and I’ll help you figure out the size.
US ring size chart
Here are the standard measurements for common US ring sizes. If you fall between two sizes, see the tips below.
| US size | Circumference (mm) | Inside diameter (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 49.3 | 15.7 |
| 6 | 51.9 | 16.5 |
| 7 | 54.4 | 17.3 |
| 8 | 57.0 | 18.1 |
| 9 | 59.5 | 18.9 |
| 10 | 62.1 | 19.8 |
Tips for getting the most accurate size
- Measure at the end of the day. Fingers are usually a little bigger in the evening, and they swell in heat (something we know all about in Arizona). Measuring later in the day helps you avoid a ring that feels too tight.
- Measure more than once. Take two or three measurements to make sure you get the same number.
- Wide bands fit tighter. A wide band covers more of your finger, so it feels snugger than a thin one in the same size. If you’re between sizes, or you’re choosing a wide band, go up a half size.
- Your dominant hand may be slightly larger. If you’re shopping for your right hand and you’re right-handed, measure that hand specifically.
- Cold fingers shrink. Don’t measure right after you’ve been outside in the cold or holding something icy.
Shop rings by size
Because my rings are one of a kind, each one comes in just one size, which is listed right on the product page. Here are a few in the shop right now:
- Size 6: the Curved Turquoise Ring, a delicate silver V-shaped setting holding a tiny turquoise colored bead.
- Size 7: the Light Blue Topaz Ring, a faceted teardrop topaz on a textured, beaded silver band.
- Size 8: the Unique Garnet Ring, a square-cut garnet set in an intricately designed silver band.
- Size 9: the Double Drop Topaz Ring, two petite teardrop topazes, one warm brown and one cool blue.
Not sure? Try an adjustable ring
If you really can’t pin down your size, or you’re buying a ring as a gift, an adjustable ring is a great option. These gently open or close to fit, so they work for a range of fingers.
The Basket Weave Ring is a wider silver-plated brass band with a detailed woven pattern that wraps all the way around. The Intertwined Silver Ring is another adjustable piece, with shimmery matte silver-toned shapes that interlace in a playful way.
One tip: open and close an adjustable ring gently and only as much as you need to. Bending it back and forth over and over can weaken the metal.
